Stunning announcement out of Albany, N.Y., The Associated Press is
reporting that a spokeswoman for the New York State Department of
Agriculture says rat poison was found in tainted pet food that killed
several animals and sparked a nationwide recall of nearly 100 brands
manufactured by Menu Foods of Canada. Spokeswoman Jessica Chittenden
would not identify the chemical or its source beyond saying it was a
rodent poison. State agriculture officials have scheduled a news
conference this afternoon to release laboratory findings from tests on
the pet food conducted this week. The deaths of 9 dogs and cats, who
were fed the food by Menu to see if they liked it, led to a nationwide
recall. An unknown number of animals have died since. The "cuts and
gravy" style pet food food sold in cans and pouches, was packaged
between Dec. 3 and March 6. It was sold and distributed through some of
the nation's leading stores such as Wal-Mart, Kroger's, Publix and
Safeway. The FDA has said it was focusing on toxins produced by mold,
which may have contaminated the wheat gluten. Gluten is used as a filler
to give cuts-and-gravy type food a gelatinous consistency. |
